One String... offers 11 original compositions and one cover, touching on a range of styles including country, blues, and Latin. He's technically adept, with a clean, straightforward approach to the music, and a melodic composer, drawing the inspiration for many of the tunes from his travels around the world. Ultimately, it's Sparks' impeccable taste and performance style that holds everything together. Neshamah, on the other hand, is a collection of Jewish traditional music played on acoustic guitar. I'm not sure if this has ever been done before, but it's a project that works really well. The tunes are surprisingly melodic, with Sparks taking an improvisational slant on many of them. A truly groundbreaking project and one that also makes for refreshing listening. I'd recommend both to any fan of good music, be it guitar or otherwise. - Jim Lee (Simi Valley, CA)
